Going the Distance

Whatever you think you can do, or dream begin it now...boldness has genius, power and magic in it.-Goethe

One more night of rest and it’s a 4 a.m. wake up, breakfast and head for the Lean Horse starting line. On Saturday the 23rd at 6:00 a.m. Mountain Standard Time I will begin my 100 mile odyssey. If I run very well I should finish right about 5:56 a.m. on Sunday the 24th. I can be flexible and I will be happy just to finish but I’m not entertaining any other times.

The GeekGrl will be helping me out on the trail and she and I will be writing about our thoughts and experiences out on the trail and that will become the race report. I very much look forward to writing it over the next two days.

Wish me luck!

Enjoy the mood music.

  11. You did it. Un-flipping-real. I truly believe you are the most mentally tough SOB I have ever seen.

Rest-Rest-Rest and for god's sake-don't do the marathon next weekend....unless you really want to.

100 Miles. 100 Miles. that blows me away.

  12. You are my hero. I cannot even imagine that distance.
nothing but guts out there for sure. And kiss your wife for being such a strong supporter of this crazy race, crazy Brian.

That marathon next weekend probably sounds like a piece of cake after this weekend, but maybe you should just schedule yourself for a pedicure and a massage and call it a day.....

  15. Oh. My. God!

Do you even know what a totally amazing rockstar you are?!

27.5 hours for your first 100 miler is almost UNHEARD of fast! I am slightly obsessed with ultrarunning (reading about it currently not doing it. First 50K in Sept.) I have read a lot of first 100 miler reports. Many end with DNF and the crazy buggers try it again. The ones that finish are often after the course cut off, but who cares. They ran 100 miles!

But not Brian man of steel. You did it! You freaking DID IT! All 100 miles!

I can't imagine the physical and mental hell you went though out there. I can't imagine the mental hell Misty went through crewing for you, and seeing the man she loves push himself to the absolute limit, but I am so awed by you both.

Congratulations seems like a wholly inadequate word. I am truly without words. Thank you for letting us bystanders come with you.

  19. Congratulations! I knew you'd pull it off, but I'm beyond impressed, nonetheless. How much sense does that make?

I hope you recover quickly. :-)

  20. I am in awe.... complete awe...

wow. 100 miles, sheer will to finish, truly I don't know what to type ~ unbelievable ~ to do a race of that distance. My hat is off to you!

    Congratulations truly insperational.

I think you fall into the completely crazy catogory to sign up for a marathon the week after?!
do it, don't do it, the fact you have it on your plans is well... nuts! I love it!

May your feet feel better quickly...

  22. Congratulations - 100 miles is a LONG.WAY.TO.RUN. It's incomprehensible to me, really.

  23. You did it, what can I say, welcome to the 100 miler club, an exclusive club, especially among IronMan's finishers.

Sounded like a tough outing. But you did it and that what counts. 27+ hours, great job, most 1st timers don't even finish.

Seriously, rest up, hold that buckle tight and enjoy your accomplishment.

  24. Congratulations!

    My mind boggles.

  25. Congratulations on your 100 miler!

I have done long stuff...but never 100 miles. I knew a LONG time ago when I crewed for a friend at Western States that I didn't have the "IT" required to go that distance.

    Be proud!

    Looking forward to your story.
Especially the night portion...I often wonder how that is...running alone for miles at night.
